Calgary Women's Imaging Centre
In April 2002, two female radiologists took the opportunity to address the unique needs of women in the Calgary area by opening the Calgary Women's Imaging Centre. This centrally located facility provides comprehensive specialized women’s medical imaging services, including:
Bone Mineral Density Testing: This test determines whether you’re at risk for osteoporosis, a potentially debilitating deterioration of the bones that affects nearly 25 percent of women over the age of 50.
Needle Localization: This procedure is done prior to a breast biopsy or breast surgery to locate a breast abnormality that can be seen on a mammogram or ultrasound picture but cannot be felt. It may also be used to verify the location of an already diagnosed breast cancer.
Mammography: This test can detect breast cancer when it is confined to the breast. Ninety-seven percent of women diagnosed at this stage survive without a recurrence for at least five years. Some experts suggest that you should have a mammogram once a year after the age of 40.
Ultrasound: For women, pelvic ultrasound is most often used to examine the bladder, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. During pregnancy, it is used to monitor the health and development of the embryo or fetus. A physician may also use breast ultrasound to help diagnose breast abnormalities detected during a physical exam.
Galactography: A test in which X-ray dye is injected into a breast duct prior to a mammogram to check for any abnormality within the duct that may be causing discharge. This procedure is also done to intensify a duct with an abnormality prior to surgical removal.
Cyst aspirations: A test in which a needle is inserted into the area of interest to confirm whether that area contains fluid. The fluid is sometimes sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Core biopsies: A test in which a biopsy is performed using a large gauge biopsy needle to guide the radiologist’s instruments to the site of an abnormal growth. It is done to sample tissue from an area of concern that has been detected in a recent mammogram or ultrasound.
