Services for Children

At CML HealthCare we understand that medical testing can be especially frightening for children. From the toddler to the teen, the unknown can be “very scary.” That’s why we familiarize every child with the procedure and the equipment beforehand—our staff knows that a little knowledge goes a long way toward alleviating the fears of testing. This, coupled with our child-friendly staff, makes every member of the family—from children to parents—feel safe and cared for.

Note: The provincial codes listed beside each test indicate the provinces in which the test is offered.

We offer the following medical imaging services for children:

Ultrasound (BC, AB, ON): This is a test that uses high frequency sound waves to allow physicians to see inside the body. It can be used in children to evaluate the abdomen, head, hip, kidneys, pelvis, and spine.

  • Abdominal ultrasound is used to examine the internal organs, including the liver, gall bladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and urinary bladder. Blood flow to some of these organs also can be checked.
  • Cranial ultrasound is used to examine the tissues and ventricles of the brain. It is usually performed on infants who still have a soft spot (called the anterior fontanelle) in their skull.
  • Kidney ultrasound takes pictures of both kidneys and the urinary bladder. It does not test the function of the kidneys.
  • Pelvic ultrasound is usually done to look at the uterus and ovaries in a girl. It may also be used to look at the bladder. Pelvic ultrasound can also be done for both girls and boys to search for a possible mass or look for the cause of pelvic pain.
  • Spinal ultrasound is used to look for abnormalities in the spinal cord.
  • Hip ultrasound is used to look for a dislocated or underdeveloped hip. It can be performed in babies from the newborn period to about 6 to 8 months of age.

X-ray (BC, AB, ON): Physicians have used X-rays for over a century to see inside the body in order to diagnose a variety of problems, including cancer, fractures, and pneumonia.

CT Scan (BC, AB, ON): CT scanning of internal organs, bone, soft tissue, and blood vessels can be done to detect brain tumours, head injuries, and signs of stroke. It provides greater clarity and reveals more details than regular X-ray exams.

MRI (BC, AB, ON): This test allows physicians to better evaluate parts of the body and certain diseases than other imaging methods such as X-ray, ultrasound, and CT scanning. For children who are claustrophobic or feel a high level of anxiety with medical testing, CML HealthCare offers Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Open MRI).
